Preparing your car for a camping trip

(NC) Getting into the woods or relaxing lakeside by a tent and firepit are time-honoured Canadian traditions. A camping trip can also mean a road trip through more remote parts of the country, so it’s important to prepare before heading out. Here are a few key steps to make sure you and your car are ready for the journey:

Keep fuel costs down. Gas can be one of the biggest expenses on a camping trip. Depending on your insurer, you may have access to resources for a camping trip. For example, Belairdirect has an app with a fuel-efficiency feature that estimates your average gas savings over 30 days based on how you drive, your vehicle type and gas prices in your province. It also provides tips to help improve fuel efficiency.

Do your summer maintenance. Consider checking these components before travelling to a remote area:

  • brakes
  • headlights and signal lights
  • wiper blades—replace if needed
  • car battery
  • fluid levels: oil, washer fluid, coolant, brake fluid

Make sure your insurance matches your vehicle and needs. If you’re taking a newly acquired RV, or towing trailer, you may need to update your insurance. By contacting your insurer before you leave, you can make sure you have the right coverage.

Know what to pack. Bringing a printed map or saved directions in case you lose signal in a dead zone can help with navigation and peace of mind. Bring some snacks and extra water for the road. It’s also always a good idea to have an emergency kit ready in your car, including first aid supplies, a battery-operated flashlight, a candle for heat and road flares.

With the right preparation, you and your vehicle can be ready for any surprises the road might throw at you. The only thing left is to set up your campsite and enjoy the time off. You can find more road trip tips at belairdirect.com.
