Tips to keep your home smoke- and vape-free

(NC) We all want our homes to be healthy and happy places for ourselves and our families. One way to achieve this is by creating a home that’s free from the chemicals and toxins found in second-hand smoke and vapour.

The health risks of second-hand smoke from smoking cigarettes are well-known, which can include lung cancer, heart disease and breathing problems among adults and more frequent and severe asthma attacks among children.

While second-hand vapour contains far fewer chemicals than second-hand smoke, it is not harmless.  There is some evidence that e-cigarette use increases the level of nicotine and other chemicals on indoor surfaces.

Below are some tips for a healthier home, which you can use if you or someone in your family smokes or vapes:

Store products safely. Vaping liquid containing nicotine is poisonous if swallowed or absorbed through the skin, particularly to young children. When buying a container of vaping liquid with nicotine, look for one that has a child-resistant closure and a poison hazard symbol. Keep all tobacco and vaping products and accessories out of the hands of children.

Avoid smoking and vaping indoors. There is no safe level of exposure to second-hand smoke; it is hazardous for everyone, especially for children. The health effects from exposure to second-hand vapour are still unknown. However, the risks are expected to be much lower compared to smoke from a tobacco product.
