Productive things to do in your free time

(NC) Sometimes it can be hard to expand our horizons and break out of our routine during our spare time. Whether you’re a retiree looking for a new hobby, a parent searching for something exciting to do while the kids are at school or a go-getter hoping to try something rewarding after work, here are some helpful ideas:

Take an interesting class. Learning a new skill exercises new parts of your brain while supporting your personal and professional development. Try something relaxing, like a painting class or water yoga. Or boost your resume by learning how to use a new web application or speak a second language.

Start a blog. Even if you’re not a strong writer, creating a blog can help you improve your grammar, communication style and written skills. It can also help you explore topics of interest and teach you to organize and express your knowledge in a clear, engaging way.

Volunteer. There are so many important social and charitable causes worthy of your time and attention. Do some research to find an organization in your community that works on something you feel passionate about and that offers volunteer shifts you can fit into your schedule.

Get a part-time job. Flexible or temporary work can help you dip your toes into the workplace after a break or try out a new industry while earning some extra cash. Try being a tour guide for a local cultural organization in your neighbourhood, a translator if you know another language or a tutor.

A new part-time gig coming up is working as an enumerator or crew leader for Statistics Canada to collect information from your community for the next census. Applications open in January 2021, with start dates in April 2021. Find more information at census.gc.ca/jobs.
