A virus transplant recipients need to be aware of

--------- SCRIPT ---------

Reporter Script:

There’s a common but little-known virus called cytomegalovirus, or C M V, that about half the adult population in Canada has had. Most of us don’t know it because a healthy immune system can usually fight it off.

But C M V can be a serious problem for the very young and old, the immunocompromised and the thousands of Canadians who have an organ or stem cell transplant every year.

Transplant recipient Susan McKenzie shares her insights.

Spokesperson Quote:

Transplant patients like me are at higher risk of C M V infection. We take medication to help prevent organ rejection, it also can weaken our immune system and make us more susceptible to other viruses. If we have C M V or get it, there can be serious complications such as organ rejection or potentially even death.

Reporter Script:

If you or a family member is undergoing a transplant procedure, talk to your doctor about the risks of C M V and how to protect yourself or your loved ones.
