4 things to know about eczema
(NC) Atopic dermatitis, commonly known as eczema, is a chronic skin condition that affects roughly one in five Canadians at some point in their life. Its symptoms can range from mild dry, itchy skin to more severe widespread skin rashes, debilitating pain and psychological impacts. We connected with dermatologist Dr. Aaron Drucker to learn more about this common condition.
What is eczema?
“Eczema is a common condition with skin rashes and lesions, accompanied by persistent itch. The itch causes people with eczema to scratch their skin, which sets off a cycle of itch, inflammation and skin damage,” says Drucker.
Is it contagious?
Dr. Drucker tells us, “No. Eczema is not contagious. Its causes are complicated, but presently, we understand eczema to be caused by genetic and immune system factors, and things in the environment that are hard to pin down. An eczema rash or skin symptoms cannot be passed from one person to another.”
How is it treated?
Dr. Drucker shares, “Multiple medical treatments are available, ranging from moisturizing and skin care to prescription treatments. The good news is there have been advancements in eczema treatments in recent years, and there is great hope for patients.”
Is there a cure?
“Currently, there is no cure,” says Dr. Drucker. “Eczema can be well managed for most people with the right treatment and support. The medical community continues to investigate causes and optimal ways to treat it.”
